BOOK RESELLERS
Public libraries play a vital role in the life of their community. They are community hubs, meaning that they provide a central access point for a range of cultural and recreational programs and services, along with health and social programs and services to nurture community life.
Over the years, public libraries have developed a diversity of programs and services to meet the evolving needs of older adults. Such programs and services often aim to offer lifelong learning opportunities. A systematic review examining the evolution of public libraries in Canada showed that older adults are quite eager to participate in lifelong learning activities. A wide range of topics of interest among older adults could be hobbies, leisure pursuits, humanities, social and international issues, religion, philosophy, arts, technology and health-related issues (such as common health problems, nutrition and stress management).
It’s no wonder we see so many older adults going to public libraries to access books, watch movies, listen to music, read newspapers, take classes (for example, language, cooking or computer), and attend workshops and lectures. No doubt that specially designed books could be used in such an environment.
Seniors leaving in Senior Housings (housing for seniors/retirement houses) usually get the necessary attention and care. They are provided with various options including books they can order in helping them maintain their overall health and well-being.
Retirement homes make it easy for residents to remain mentally and physically active as well as socially engaged in their communities and with family and friends so they can enjoy a happier, healthier and more vibrant lifestyle. Specially designed books could be an important and integral part of these programs.
The printed books market will be stagnating in the years to come, but the segment of books designed for seniors has very impressive prospects of growth.
Seniors are still more likely to read classical printed books. Unfortunately, there is still no distinct market of printed books that are aimed at seniors as a social group, with the exception of a very limited number of books aimed at people suffering from Alzheimer disease or other types of dementia.
In addition, given the most recent trends, the senior population will considerably grow in the years to come, because baby boomers are now turning 65 years and more. This target audience should be served the product they are looking for.
